Tems elevates Nigerian style in 'Try Me' to something wonderous & incomparable

Singer, songwriter, and upcoming producer Tems drops a wonderous and incomparable style on ‘Try Me’.

The single was released Aug 7th, though now we are delivered the interesting visuals. Tems, Temilade Openiyi, is Nigerian born and has already had an extensive route in music - writing songs aged 9, her music career aged 13 and producing at 20. This is easily seen as ‘Try Me’ in particular seems unimaginable to be made bit by bit, due to the flawless intertwining of percussion, instrumentation and vocals; the whole is so perfect. It holds a fantastic vibe that is a merge of afrobbeats, soul, R&B, and rap; yet twisted in such a way of Tems’ introspective, creating this open, bright, passionate and boundless atmosphere.

Rap and R&B can be heard in the solid percussion; creating a steady beat for all other timbres to float apon. As a high synth rings true throughout the track, afrobeats implements its delicate melodies and heavy bass. The soul of the record is found within Tems’ vocals and the beautiful orchestra of pad synths and harmonies adlibs. Tems’ unique voice elevates this song above the typical afrobeats that is being produced from certain African nations - Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, etc. Like a black hole, there is something hypnotising about the way her powerful voice opens and encompasses everything around it. Her style in incomparable.

Taking the narrative of the record - of the singer’s shine, regardless of the trials and tribulations imposed on Tems by others - the visuals take us down an intriguing road of individuals in chains and being held down. As the video develops, we see those individuals receive the support to break free but are searched for by their oppressors.

On release, Tems took to Instagram to caption:

Thank you all so much for waiting! TRY ME is finally OUT on all platforms🎉
For the oppressed, this is a breakout song.
For the Underrated, understated people who have been suppressed from use and abuse. .
It’s time to be FREE. ⚡⚡⚡
