THROWBACK: Cashh will forever be 'Winning'
December 2018 saw Cashh come with ‘Privacy’ - a movie/music video representing audio of soul, lush harmonies and a gentle mix of rap with Jamaican influence. It’s been 5 years since he was deported from the UK to his birth country of Jamaica. 3 years before that, he dropped ‘Winning’ - a testament to where he was at, at that point in his life, but also, I think, to how he will forever be.
The now infamous, Steel Bangelz produces this marvelous orchestration of VST’s and drum samples. It begins with full strings to build anticipation for the main act. A jittery plucked-synth then appears before Cashh first speaks with a comical: “7 in the morning; recorded this myself; engineer fell asleep”. Cashh, further instruments, misc samples and adlibs are now thrown into the mix. The Peckham raised rapper takes this time to present his first verse, as halfway through, cracking snares are whipped in the audible space.
Cashh holds a steady and confident flow constructed from bars on his life, achievements, and not dealing with subjects of unimportance to him. Even at this time he was mature in his thinking: “I hear talking. Darg I just ignore them. Why should I be bothered when them [others] aren’t important”.
Since early Cashh was and excellent artist. It would be intriguing to view an alternative Universe in which he remained in England. Yet, this isn’t the case. Things move on and we adapt. Cashh has changed; as you can see from escaping dreads and a more grown demeanor. We all have after 5 years. Though I wouldn’t personally know what Cashh went through when he was unfortunately sent to Jamaica - it must have been extremely hard; it’s understood that he wished to stay in England; and the culture shock was surely unnerving. However, looking at his current images, music and style, it would be interesting to see whether he would still return if he had the chance (maybe he does). Understandably, life in London is pretty sweet compared to other countries and us in England start on an extremely lucky platform, no matter where you are. Yet, as we grow older it seems interests change, as well as what we appreciate. Jamaica seems to holds beautiful nature, astonishing experiences, fundamental peace in surroundings and inner body, and freedom to explore happiness. Happiness is the end goal. Only from viewing what Cashh releases via social media, it seems as though he is happy. Yet even if this assumption is incorrect, he has traveled - that is exploring, learning, understanding, opening. Traveling is one of the best things we to do to grow; as Cashh’s Twitter location reads, he is “Somewhere learning”; furthermore we see this alive in the movements from Lil Duval. Potentially, in the marathon of life, deportation from England was a blessing.
