Throwback: Wiley informs us on 'Gangsters' from Playtime Is Over

Wiley’s been on a music leaking rampage at the moment via his Instagram, but let’s look back on a legendary record, ‘Gangsters’.

Produced by the E3 Don, we instantly hear the Eskibeat sound through our speakers - soaring synths; and an iconic “gangsters” sample. The track is mainly taken from the 2007 album, Playtime Is Over, which holds frequent Wiley productions; however this record was actually copied from his 2006 album Da 2nd Phase - alongside ‘Johnny was a Badboy’ and Esiboy’ (yet this is not the case on Spotify).

Say what you will about Wiley, he has been one of the best and most consistent MCs of our generation, and potentially UK lyricists of all time. As grime’s Godfather weaves between the “gangsters” sample, he rips on the topic whilst delivering quick flows; calm flows; the LDN life; his past; fake gangsters; and the real.

He recently posted a track listing of the records he’s been leaking (subsequently now removed from his page), potentially a signed of an upcoming project or even the anticipated Godfather 3? Whatever the case, the shit sounds fire. No matter your opinion of the previous Godfather albums, a lot of these new tracks sound hard, thus it seems like Wiley’s gonna have a decent 2019.
